Approximately 8% of men and 1% of women have some degree of colour blindness. The most common type of colour blindness is red-green deficiency whereby red-green retinal cone cells have an overlapping response to light. Because their response to light is so similar this causes a wavelength deficiency and therefore the brain is unable to determine red and green efficiently.
