This picture to the right shows the (Vertical Pattern) Edridge-Green Lantern, a funnel-shaped colour perception test lantern (Vertical pattern) with rotating colour discs, fitted for electrical illumination. The original lantern was designed circa 1910 with both vertical and horizontal options, for use with an electric or oil lamp. The original manufacturers were William Gowlland Ltd but this object is a later model by Rayner. Crucially its readings can be taken independently of the colour vision of the examiner.

Colour Blindness is not a disease, it is a genetic disorder. It decreases the contrast of colours. There is no treatment of colour blindness in this world.
Each plate in Ishihara Test Chart Book having only two colours RED and GREEN, others colours are complementary od red and green colours.

The Official Ishihara Color Blindness Test developed for colour vision testing. Unlike the Ishihara patterns that may be found online and viewed over a computer monitor, this colour vision test is designed to produce accurate test results in determining colour blindness and the degree of colour blindness. Since colour reproduction may vary from computer monitor-to-computer monitor, the best and most accurate method of testing for colour blindness still comes from official Ishihara album-type books. Unless the computer monitor display administering the test is capable of CRT ICC calibration and regularly degaussed and recalibrated, accurate colour and test results may not be possible. Additionally, home printed versions of the test may yield inaccurate results due to variation in ink cartridge colour. Printing of Ishihara colour tests should only be done on imaging devices accurately calibrated to CMYK or Pantone colour charts.

The Official Ishihara Color Blindness Test is accepted by leading authorities as a simple and accurate method for discovering congenital colour blindness and red-green blindness in both complete and incomplete forms. Also known as Protanomaly and Deuteranomaly, "red-weakness" and "green-weakness", respectively, are the two most common types of colour deficiency. It is said that 1 out of 100 males is subject to "red-weakness" and approximately 5 out of 100 males are subject to "green-weakness". In a test, those suffering from red-weakness fail to see the colour red with the same power
( saturation or depth of colour) as a normal observer. It is said that Males, in general, experience colour blindness at the rate of 12 in 100 while colour blind females reportedly test at a rate of 1 in 200.

Lantern Test Colour Blindness- Martin Lantern Test
In India, CP III colour vision is judged by Martin Lantern Test. Since these lamps are out of production since 1940, the Armed Forces Medical Services conducted a study in which they tried to bring the lamp test on a computer display(You can read the whole article at Armed Forces Medical Journal of India ). Since the displays are made up of primary colours itself & different displays have different colour profiles.Thus, for realistic & uniform colour production, the computer LCDs were needed to be calibrated as given in step 1.

The original Ishihara colour blindness test was introduced in early last century and since then, it is by far the most well-known colour vision deficiency test all around the world. Dr Shinobu Ishihara from Japan produced three different test sets which are widely used and which all based on the same pseudoisochromatic plates.
This test is actually designed to be used in a booklet and is usually executed by an eye doctor.But I have made an online version of the test, available right here on  Ishihara38.
The online test is based on the 38 plates edition and will give you a little feedback at the end of the test.
As this test is only made to check for red-green colour blindness, any other form of CVD cannot be detected. And at the end—if you like—you can even share your test result with your friends.This way they can see how you performed and try the test themselves if they like to.

Be aware: This test consists of scanned plates. The colours are not exactly the same as in the original version. You also have to consider, that every computer screen has different colour settings and therefore the test results might alter between different trials.

Grading Level of Colour Perception
Colour perception (CP) can be graded as follows:
CP-1: Correct answers to the series of colours with the smallest aperture of Martin Lantern test at 6 meters.
CP-2: Must pass the Ishihara book with no errors.
CP-3: Should be able to recognize white, red and green colour signal correctly at a distance of 1.5 meters using largest aperture OR able to read requisite plates of Ishihara.
CP-4: When mistakes are made with white, red or green colours in the tests described under CP-3
 Accepted level of colour perception is
CP-III for Army and CP-I for Airforce and Navy.
